When Everything Happens at the Same Time…
January 14, 2022
If you’re like most people, you have too much to do.
But what if you were asked for the cause of overwhelm … in just one word?
What one word best explains it?
Most people’s answers range from personal factors (job, partner, kids) – to social factors (inbox, social media, news, etc).
Of course all of these are true, but do they get at the heart of the matter?
There is a word that Oxford defines as “the fact of two or more events or circumstances happening or existing at the same time.”
Concurrence.
Being overwhelmed feels like everything’s happening at the same time.
Concurrence recognizes the fact that some things are happening at the same time, but it questions how many.
Rarely is everything happening at the same time.
Concurrence invites exploration into what is actually happening.
Turn this minute into a moment
If you generally feel you have too much to do, begin to reflect on why. Consider it in different situations – when you’re alone, when you’re with others, looking at your phone, out for a walk. Question more deeply how many things are actually happening at the same time.
